MY GRANDFATHER’S PATH

Cinema

01/04/2023 à 12:00

The film deals with the story of the Palestinian Nakba from a different angle, through a unique journey of a Palestinian director who follows the footsteps of his grandfather on the path of his ancient trade between northern and southern Palestine, to explore the impact of villages destroyed or changed their features to become Israeli. Nizar Hassan records the memory of the inhabitants of the land, both indigenous and settlers.

Nizar Hassan was born in the village of Mashhad near Nazareth. He studied anthropology at the University of Haifa, and after graduating, he worked in television.

In the 1990s, he turned to cinema, and in 1994 he produced the film Independence, in which he pinches his Palestinian interlocutors about their opinion of Israel's strange concept of independence.

In the sequel, Jasmine (1996), Hassan speaks with Palestinians about the issue of gender relations in Palestinian society.

Seven years later, Nizar Hassan directed the powerful film Invasion, also known as 13 Days in Jenin Camp, filmed shortly after the 2002 Jenin massacre in which the Israeli army destroyed the Jenin refugee camp, killing dozens of Palestinians.

Hassan's work includes a number of other films documenting aspects of Palestinian life under Israeli occupation, including Myth (1998), Cut (2000), Challenge (2002), Karam Abu Khalil Grove (2006) and South (2008).
