HERCULES GOMES . Piano
Considered as one of today’s most evocative Brazilian pianists, Hercules Gomes stands out for his brilliant piano adaptations of popular Brazilian music known as ‘choro’, for his technical skills, choice of expressive repertoire, and strong influences of jazz and classical music, all present in his style.
Born in Vitória, Brazil, and living in São Paulo, Hercules holds a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP). Hercules has performed at some of the most important music festivals in Brazil and America. Piano Festival (Buenos Aires, Argentina); Jazz Plaza International Festival (Havana, Cuba); Brazilian Music Institute (Miami, USA); Campos do Jordão Winter Festival (São Paulo, Brazil), the Savassi Festival (Belo Horizonte, Brazil). and International Colonia do Sacramento Festival (Uruguai)
In Brazil, he harvested the 11th Nabor Pires de Camargo Prize, the 1st MIMO Instrumental Prize, and São Paulo Citizen in Culture Award. Early in his career, Hercules Gomes participated in recording the Brazilian composer Radamés Gnattali mainly as the soloist of his “Concerto Carioca No.2” with the Campinas Symphony Orchestra. After this memorable performance, he became a guest soloist at the Montevideo Philharmonic Orchestra and at OSUSP (University of São Paulo Orchestra). In 2022/23 he performed at OSUSP and with the Espírito Santo Orchestra, the “Concerto No.1 for Piano & Orchestra” dedicated to him by João Rocha. His solo performances are often programed at the best stages in Brazil, such as Sala São Paulo and Campos de Jordão Festival in 2021. In 2023 the was invited to perform at the FIP International Piano Festival with Nailor Proveta (clarinet and saxophone).
In 2013, Hercules recorded his first solo CD titled “Pianismo” with his own compositions and arrangements, showcasing a panorama of Brazilian piano rhythms. In 2018 he released his second album: “No Tempo da Chiquinha” in celebration of the 170th anniversary of great Brazilian pianist and composer Chiquinha Gonzaga. In 2020, Hercules Gomes launched “Tia Amélia Para Sempre” (Selo SESC), a great woman composer who was largely overlooked by the history of Brazilian music, and “Sarau Tupinamba” in 2022.
