In the shifting geopolitical situation of the region, what is the future role of Beirut and its harbor?
Reimagining the port today is not only a matter of logistics and infrastructure. It is an opportunity to rethink and repair the fractured relationship between the city and its harbor, and to restore a connection that once shaped Beirut’s destiny and identity as a major port city in the eastern Mediterranean.
Beirut al-Marfa' explores the entangled relation of Beirut and its port, from a maritime gateway to contested grounds.
Through archival materials, models, installations, and proposals, the exhibition invites reflection on the port’s shifting role in the life of the city.
The exhibition unfolds through the Beit Beirut Urban Observatory’s three thematic imperatives: Preserve, Repair, and Share, serving as a prism to understand the urban challenges involved in the port’s reconstruction.
