Where are our cultural players in times of war, and what are they doing?
L'Agenda Culturel went to meet them, interview them and listen to their stories.
Rania Hammoud, Gallerist. Lives in Beirut
How are you doing?
I feel a mix of anxiety, heaviness, emptiness, hope, and gratitude. While I’m thankful to have a roof over my head, my heart is broken seeing so many displaced and witnessing so many victims and destruction.
What is your daily life like in a time of war?
I have found myself more interested in the political situation in our region and have been reading articles to catch up on what I missed.
To escape, I go to the sea, swimming, snorkeling and immersing myself in its serenity a couple of times a week. It has always been my refuge, a place where I can recharge and find solace during these challenging times.
How do you continue your artistic activity?
I am currently organizing my archive and various aspects of the gallery that I didn’t have time to address before. I’m also considering future projects with artists to pursue once this difficult time is behind us. In light of the current circumstances, I’m exploring opportunities for sales abroad to help sustain our operations and manage our ongoing commitments.
How do you see Lebanon's future?
I am always optimistic and believe that hope is essential for life (l’espoir fait vivre). I see Lebanon as being in a constant cycle of dark times followed by brighter days. Having lived through the war, I’ve become accustomed to this cycle and developed mechanisms to cope. Despite the challenges we face, we rise again, and this resilience fuels my hope for a better future.
To overcome fear and anxiety, I suggest the following:
Books
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
Daring Greatly by Brené Brown
Music
Fayrouz - My all-time favorite for calming down.
Marilynne Naman - A new Lebanese singer I’ve recently discovered .
Cesaria Evora .
Series and Movies
I always recommend light films that transport us to another world filled with beauty and serene sceneries. Films like Cinema Paradiso, The Postman, Life is Beautiful, The Holiday, and The Bridges of Madison County are great choices.
The White Lotus - A thought-provoking series that balances humor and drama .
Podcast
Beirut Sonder Stories - Features uplifting and inspiring stories from individuals in Lebanon, highlighting resilience and hope.
Ricardo Karam Official - Focuses on culture and the human experience, offering insightful interviews with a variety of guests.
Dr Joe Dispenza which compile various guided meditation sessions designed to facilitate personal growth and healing .
Any last words?
Don’t stop dreaming
Even in the darkest times, let’s create an imaginative world where beauty blooms amidst the ruins, and hope stands tall against despair. Let us keep believing that better days lie ahead and never cease spreading the truth.
